06-Oct:
In-form Barker heads for Manchester after back to back wins
Peter Barker, from Upminster in London, will head into
next week’s Hi-Tec World Squash Championships – Manchester 2008,
in top form having captured his second successive Tour title
when winning The Merritt Properties Open last weekend.
The
Number 12 seed, who faces Mexican Eric Galvez in the first round
in Manchester on 13th October, started his winning streak by
claiming the richest prize of his career when also beating
favourite David Palmer in the final of the Sweet Home Chicago
Open just over a fortnight ago.
Barker is not the only British hope to be in fine form ahead of
The World Championships with third seed James Willstrop
entering the event on the back of his most successful year ever
and Nick Matthew, the number 8 seed, having bounced back
from injury with victory in Holland last month.
“We are entering exciting times for British squash and the
tournament is guaranteed to have at least 17 players across the
men’s and women’s field which is a remarkable achievement and
hopefully we can give the crowds plenty to cheer about,” said
Matthew.
In the women’s competition six Brits are competing and the
tournament ambassador, Sarah Kippax from Cheshire, is
also in top form after recently winning her last two
tournaments.
The Hi-Tec World Squash Championships – Manchester 2008 start on
Saturday 11th October with qualifying rounds, which are open
free to the public, being staged on the first two days. The
men’s main draw starts on Monday 13th with the women a day
later. Limited numbers of tickets and hospitality packages are
still available. |
"These
wins have obviously come at the right time for me as I look to
put in a good showing in front of a home crowd in Manchester
next week.
"The draw is exceptionally strong this year and I will have to
be on top of my game throughout if I want to have a shot but
hopefully myself and the other British players will do well."
